NOVEMBER 4TH PBIS MEETING

•November 5, 2009 • Leave a Comment
  • PBIS Meeting ~November 4, 2009
  • Welcome to new members: Christine Navarette and Jaime Leston… A welcome to Jackie Carroccia from Petrides our liaison PBIS coach….
  • POC Bi Weekly Assembly…. Will recognize Students of the Week and Whole class and teacher exemplary behavior at dismissal.
  • After Pledge…. Morning announcements…. Meredith will announce Students of the Week.. On Monday Mornings… to kick off the week.
  • Student of the Week.. is NOT based on points… it is based on teacher and para’s choice of students they feel have taken small steps in improvement in behavior and or academic categories. Level 2 student push….our Yellow Zone students… who need to be pushed to green need to be acknowledged.
  • Many team members are concerned that Level 2 students are not being focused on.. These are our Yellow Zone students…. As per PBIS these are the kids that can go either way… and we should make a giant effort to push these kids to green.
  • how can we make staff at dismissal more vigilant to behaviors…
  • Discussion about we go with what works…. We are uniform…  ways to get teachers to support Paw System.
  • Invitation to Barianne to participate in POC assembly every other Friday.
  • Jackie explains that one of our lesson components is teaching Good Behavior Expectations.. part of the curriculum.
  • Proudly
  • Achieve
  • Wise choices
  • Slogan for next meeting… WE WILL HAVE ONE!
  • Student Council applications closing out by next Wednesday. Meredith is facilitating
  • Jaime Leston in charge of going to teachers to collect names for Student of the Week and explaining the criteria.
  • John came up with a way to include Level 2 Students in POC activities. Three Level 2’s in a row or Three Level 2’s in one month… etc… again the push is to support our Level 2 students who are trying very hard to reach and maintain Level 2. Reach out to bus paras’ about any kids that should be acknowledged for behaviors. Again looking for that student who may be a struggling student but makes attempts to choose wisely and needs a ‘recognition boost’.
  • Next meeting, committee for Red Zone kids.
  • Final feedback on rubric… posters to be made for each venue.
  • Announcement by John asking staff to please assist tables that still have kids waiting for dismissal..
  • Major issue that John brought up is that everyone MUST be down by 2:40 so he can move the buses out. The longer the kids sit the more likely there will be issues.

Universal Training III

Very informative.
Time to fill out benchmarks of quality assessment. This gives us an idea to plan our goals for the following year.

Fill out Benchmark and return to Celia.

Copy of matrix to everyone.

Revise and edit matrix. Make suggestions.

Crisis room rubric. An idea of when to use crisis.

Discussion with regard to utilize crisis room. Exit interview on each child and kept in file. Child is accountable and exit interview is data.

Power of Choice meeting at the beginning of the year for staff.

Power of Choice assembly for all students. Key speakers.

Reinstate TIME out 1 and 2 in classrooms so students are aware they can manage themselves, given an opportunity to get it together before a TIME out 3. Many teachers are not aware of time out 1 and 2. Give teachers strategies.

Reward system for paws at dismissal separate from power of choice. Meredith has been working hard on implementing a reward system.

Teachers are still waving away paw prints at dismissal because the kids were not behaving all day but sitting for dismissal.

Paw Events and A Call for More Volunteers!

•May 3, 2009 • Leave a Comment

footballkickballUnfortunately we did not photograph this Paw Event, hence the lame graphics. . It was a huge success 65 students from the 2nd and 3rd floor participated with Mr.Mac, Ms. Broderick, Ms. Collins, Ms. Vivaldi and Ms. Camille in football and kickball, on Monday April 27th 6th and 7th Period. Everyone had a good time.

We are planning our next event for May 18th. This time the criteria is a little more stringent students must have had appropriate behavior and earned paws all but for 1 day during the period between (4/27/-5/15.) That means a student can have only missed earning a max of 2 paws , one for transition and one for cafeteria behavior to attend the Paw Sports Events .

We want to thank everyone who gave up time to organize and execute this event for our kids. As stated everyone had a super time and if I had remembered the camera we would have pictures to prove it. We are also thinking of extending the paws to include transitions after lunch. Let us know what you think of this here by leaving a comment.

If you are a teacher, a counselor, a coach, a speech teacher, or out any of classroom personel , and would like to host a Paw Event, we need volunteers. The Paw Event can take place any day of the week. you just need to get an idea of what you would like to do, set a date and criteria for students attending.

It is very important we get more people on board supporting our behavior program, with their time and effort, if we want to really impact our student’s behavior in a positive way. Please if you would like to host an event, leave a comment here and see Ms. Broderick or Ms. Roche to work out the details. Also if you have any suggestions we would greatly appreciate them.

Here are the notes  from today’s PBIS Meeting

It was mentioned during the PBIS  meeting that  in the best case scenario every staff member would be present at these meetings to connect them to our goals of positively impacting student behavior throughout the day .  Since that is not physically  possible in an attempt  to create a closer connection between the schools needs and  this committees initiatives  after each meeting  will share the notes here .

Now comes your part we  depend on you to comment and make suggestions so that this committee can better serve the needs of student,  teachers, paras-professionals,and counselors.

Remember the more involved teachers and para-professionals become involved in implementing this  behavior program  the more effective it will be.

First the announcement of our first PAW Event!

1.  Paw Games with  Mr. Andrew and Mr. Mac.  April 27th,  2nd and 3rd floor.

How do you get invited to play ?

You can earn Paw Prints from now until April 24th .  You need 12 our of 16 paws  to be eligibile to partake in these games. You can earn two paws a day one for   transitioning from the class room to your dismissal seat. One for good behavior once at the table.  Teachers please keep track of the paw prints.  Today is the first day of this contest.
2.  Discussion of Cohort Meetings and staff input.  Concerns were addressed and are ongoing.  Input from all staff is welcome so that any concerns are addressed. Suggestions from any and all staff is encouraged as PBIS is an organization effort.
3.  Examination of  data had shown that dismissal  was a ‘hot zone’ and  implementation of paw print  system was put into place.  Results from data show that dismissal has shown improvement as teachers and students become aware of expected behaviors at dismissal.

4.  Feedback was given that when rewards for dismissal are handed out students welcome them and understand that they have earned these specific rewards because of their dismissal behavior.

5.  Staff has given feedback that the transitioning of students from classroom to lunchroom  was also a hot zone.  The addition of a separate paw for transition was decided upon.

6.  Staff must understand that PBIS works on a positive reward system.  How we speak to the kids sets the tone. Try to phrase it positively.

7.  Point sheets were discussed with regard to being used as an effective tool to help students ‘manage their behavior’.  Can they get themselves back together before the end of the period?  Can they re-group? Encouraging  student self-reflection in terms of their behavior and  goals is important .

7.  Bus behavior.  Assigned seating was suggested.
8.The importance of teaching behavior in the same  way we teach reading and math.  Are we teaching expected behaviors in the classroom? Lessons on transitioning, lunchroom, bus behavior.

9.  Data is showing that afternoon 7th period is a ‘hot zone’ for students.  What can we do to address this time of day?  Mr. Mac suggested ‘likeable learning’. We will be asking for suggestions from the staff about this time of  day and how to reduce behavior incidents.

10.  Para collaboration meetings.  Paras will meet with PBIS Donald Don to collaborate and brainstorm how to make para student experiences positive.  We welcome experienced paras to also participate and share ideas and experiences.

So those are the minutes of todays meeting  you can make a suggestion by clicking on the comment button on the top of this  post. Please do your input is so important.
