Here are the notes from today’s PBIS Meeting
It was mentioned during the PBIS meeting that in the best case scenario every staff member would be present at these meetings to connect them to our goals of positively impacting student behavior throughout the day . Since that is not physically possible in an attempt to create a closer connection between the schools needs and this committees initiatives after each meeting will share the notes here .
Now comes your part we depend on you to comment and make suggestions so that this committee can better serve the needs of student, teachers, paras-professionals,and counselors.
Remember the more involved teachers and para-professionals become involved in implementing this behavior program the more effective it will be.
First the announcement of our first PAW Event!
1. Paw Games with Mr. Andrew and Mr. Mac. April 27th, 2nd and 3rd floor.
How do you get invited to play ?
You can earn Paw Prints from now until April 24th . You need 12 our of 16 paws to be eligibile to partake in these games. You can earn two paws a day one for transitioning from the class room to your dismissal seat. One for good behavior once at the table. Teachers please keep track of the paw prints. Today is the first day of this contest.
2. Discussion of Cohort Meetings and staff input. Concerns were addressed and are ongoing. Input from all staff is welcome so that any concerns are addressed. Suggestions from any and all staff is encouraged as PBIS is an organization effort.
3. Examination of data had shown that dismissal was a ‘hot zone’ and implementation of paw print system was put into place. Results from data show that dismissal has shown improvement as teachers and students become aware of expected behaviors at dismissal.
4. Feedback was given that when rewards for dismissal are handed out students welcome them and understand that they have earned these specific rewards because of their dismissal behavior.
5. Staff has given feedback that the transitioning of students from classroom to lunchroom was also a hot zone. The addition of a separate paw for transition was decided upon.
6. Staff must understand that PBIS works on a positive reward system. How we speak to the kids sets the tone. Try to phrase it positively.
7. Point sheets were discussed with regard to being used as an effective tool to help students ‘manage their behavior’. Can they get themselves back together before the end of the period? Can they re-group? Encouraging student self-reflection in terms of their behavior and goals is important .
7. Bus behavior. Assigned seating was suggested.
8.The importance of teaching behavior in the same way we teach reading and math. Are we teaching expected behaviors in the classroom? Lessons on transitioning, lunchroom, bus behavior.
9. Data is showing that afternoon 7th period is a ‘hot zone’ for students. What can we do to address this time of day? Mr. Mac suggested ‘likeable learning’. We will be asking for suggestions from the staff about this time of day and how to reduce behavior incidents.
10. Para collaboration meetings. Paras will meet with PBIS Donald Don to collaborate and brainstorm how to make para student experiences positive. We welcome experienced paras to also participate and share ideas and experiences.
